The Gifts of Imperfection

Brené Brown

Wholehearted living through imperfect mood swings

Perfectionism often survives long after the standards that created it have stopped serving a woman’s life. Brown organizes wholehearted living around authenticity, self-compassion, rest, creativity, gratitude, meaningful work, play, and belonging. Mood swings are not evidence of personal failure, nor can emotional wellbeing be achieved by attitude alone. At this stage of life, the book offers permission to release the exhausting identity of the person who is always composed, useful, and approved of. Letting go is paired with cultivation: less comparison, more boundaries; less performance, more participation. Imperfection becomes not a flaw to display proudly, but the ordinary condition of being connected.

About Brené Brown

Brené Brown entered shame research hoping to understand and control life’s messiness. Instead, interviews with wholehearted people forced a personal reversal: the researcher who disliked vulnerability had to accept imperfection as the route into connection, parenting, and love.
