The Happiness Trap

Russ Harris

Making room for mood swings without obeying them

Emotional discomfort can increase just when women feel pressure to be grateful, stable, and in control. Harris introduces Acceptance and Commitment Therapy through defusion, acceptance, present-moment attention, values, and committed action. Mood swings may have hormonal, medical, psychological, or situational causes; ACT does not require pretending feelings are harmless or irrelevant. Within the MHS library, the book offers a practical distinction between making room for emotion and allowing it to run the day. The aim is not constant happiness, but enough psychological flexibility to choose meaningful behavior while difficult thoughts and sensations are still present.

About Russ Harris

Russ Harris began as a newly qualified doctor in 1989 and recognized his patients’ stress, anxiety, and dissatisfaction because he was struggling similarly himself. That overlap moved him from giving conventional advice toward translating ACT into clear, practical language.
