Grit

Angela Duckworth

Staying power as midlife strength training

Long goals often collide with changing energy, caregiving, setbacks, and the temptation to interpret slower progress as failure. Duckworth argues that sustained interest and deliberate effort matter alongside talent. Strength training offers a concrete example: capacity grows through repeated practice, feedback, rest, and returning after interruption. Within this collection, the idea is useful when it remains flexible. Persistence should not mean ignoring pain, structural barriers, or evidence that a goal no longer fits. Grit is strongest when joined with judgment—the ability to distinguish a difficult season worth continuing from a path that deserves redesign, support, or release.

About Angela Duckworth

Angela Duckworth left management consulting in her twenties to teach mathematics and science in public schools. Watching hardworking students outperform classmates who seemed naturally quicker redirected her from the corporate ladder toward psychology and the long study of sustained effort.
