The Body Is Not an Apology

Sonya Renee Taylor

Radical body respect beyond midlife weight gain

Body shame does not exist separately from racism, sexism, ableism, fatphobia, ageism, and commercial beauty standards. Taylor presents radical self-love as a collective practice of dismantling the systems that teach people to rank bodies. Weight gain is not treated as failure or as something self-love must reverse. For women carrying several roles at once, the book expands body acceptance beyond private confidence: notice inherited beliefs, interrupt shame-based language, challenge exclusion, and stop measuring human value through appearance or productivity. Radical self-love is not constant positive feeling; it is refusing to collaborate with the idea that any body must earn dignity.
