Prototyping a life—and a strength training habit
Work, identity, health, and family rarely change according to one perfect plan. Burnett and Evans use design thinking to reframe stuck problems, create alternative “Odyssey Plans,” and test possibilities through small prototypes before making expensive commitments. Strength training offers a useful parallel rather than the book’s subject: capacity develops through experiments, feedback, repetition, and adjustment. For women balancing change and responsibility, the method makes reinvention less dramatic and more practical. A conversation, short course, volunteer project, or trial routine can produce better information than months of abstract worry. The goal is not discovering one correct life, but building forward from what is learnable now.
About Bill Burnett and Dave Evans
Bill Burnett and Dave Evans began with one lunch and a rapid prototype. Within fifteen minutes, Burnett agreed to test Evans’s vocation course at Stanford; student demand then helped transform that experiment into one of the university’s most popular electives.
