Siddhartha

Hermann Hesse

Stillness for restless nights and night sweats

The search for meaning often outlives the identities built around work, family, achievement, and certainty. Hesse’s protagonist rejects inherited answers, experiments with asceticism and wealth, experiences love and loss, and eventually learns through the river rather than a doctrine. Wakeful hours caused by night sweats can become the same kind of reflective space in which old ambitions and unanswered questions return. Against self-improvement culture, the novel offers a slower counterpoint: wisdom cannot always be downloaded from an expert. Some knowledge becomes real only after it has been lived, relinquished, and heard differently with age.

About Hermann Hesse

Hermann Hesse wrote from a life marked by religious conflict, war, family crisis, psychoanalysis, and a long fascination with India. Siddhartha emerged after personal upheaval, making its river journey less an exotic lesson than another version of Hesse’s lifelong search.
